Koolan Island Iron Ore Ship Loader

This contract, awarded by Aztec Resources (now owned by Mt. Gibson Iron), is for the Design and Construction of a shiploader of 3,000 tph capable of loading Panamax sized vessels.

The shiploader will be installed on the wharf of the iron ore mine at Koolan Island which is located in the Buccaneer Archipelago, 130Km NW of Derby in Western Australia.

he original mining lease was awarded to BHP in 1952 and site works commenced in 1959 and the first ore was shipped in 1965. The mine was de-commissioned by BHP in 1993 after an operating life of 28 years and the majority of the infrastructure was removed or buried on site and the island was rehabilitated.

Aztec Resources are now re-establishing an ore mine on the island.
